Tips for starting the boating season

The sun is breaking through the clouds and winter has finally released its grip on Britain – meaning there’s no better time to start preparing for the new boating season.

We’ve rounded up some tips to get you set for some sublime sailing in the coming months.

1) Inspect your boat thoroughly and rectify any problems you spot. Following last winter’s flooding and high winds, it’s important to check there is nothing wrong.
2) Create a plan of the key DIY jobs that need completing and aim to do at least one a week.
3) Clean your boat from bow to stern and air it out thoroughly. Just like a home, all boats need a good spring clean once a year.
4) Get your boat’s engine serviced – the last thing you want is it cutting out when you’re halfway down Loch Ness
5) Stock the fridge and cupboards with necessary items.
6) Update your boat’s chartplotter using the wifi at home. Trying to use 3G onboard the boat will be much slower.
7) Make sure you have all the required safety equipment on board and that its in good working order.
8) Make a plan of all the sailing or cruising you intend to do this season. Even if you don’t tick everything off, it’ll motivate you to get out on the water in the first place.
9) Finally, make sure you use your boat. Don’t waste time doing jobs that aren’t necessary, get out on the water!

LATEST NEWS from GGCUA

WELCOME TO A NEW SAILING AND BOATING SEASON!

Well it's been a relatively quiet winter along the Caledonian Canal and Great Glen. We seem to have largely escaped the vast quantities of snow others have had the misfortune to experience though temperatures have been very, very low, often sub zero for weeks on end. And of course, now the degrees celcius are on the way up, here comes the wind and rain! But it can only get better [sic], probably and hopefully!

On a much brighter note, "A BIG THANK YOU" to those who have already renewed their membership and those who are in the process of doing so, and "A BIG HELLO and THANK YOU" to our new members. We wish you all have a most enjoyable year ahead.

For yet another year we have capped our membership fees and trust you will agree this continus to represent great value. Along with your membership discounts at Caley Marina and McKewan of Inverness, we now offer you a new discount card for Gael Force Marine at their Inverness store as well as free membership to The Inland Waterways Association with access to their member offers and deals.

This year, our AGM will take place in June onboard the barge "Loch Ness" moored at Seaport Marina. We have yet to set the date though it will be on a saturday, early evening. We hope you'll be able to attend and we'll contact you asap with the details.

We are also planning a few social events over the summer months, starting off with one of the ever popular quizz nights at Dochgarroch Hall. Again, we'll be in touch as soon as a date is set.

A definite date for your diary is "The Caledonian Canal Customer Forum", an annual event held by Scottish Canals (nee British Waterways Scotland). This will take place at The Moorings Hotel, Banavie on Saturday 11th May commencing 10.30am, ending 12.15pm-ish with sandwiches and beverages. Here's the opportunity to meet the custodians of our Scottish Canals, hear their plans for our canals' future and have an opportunity to ask any questions you'd like answers to. If you would like to attend but haven't had an invite yet, please contact the Caledonian Canal office on 01463 72550 and let them know you wish to attend, or email enquiries@scottishcanals.co.uk marking your email subject as "Caledonian Canal Customer Forum" and do likewise. We look forward to seeing you there.

In the meantime, many thanks for your continued support.
